Statement from Will Ruger on U.S. Military Strike in Baghdad

January 3, 2020

ARLINGTON, Va.—Stand Together Trust’s William Ruger, Vice President of Policy and Research, issued the following statement in response to reports of a U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani:

“With the dangerous escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, we are first and foremost concerned for the safety of Americans serving in the region. General Soleimani’s death should not be mourned. However, President Trump should heed the mistakes of his predecessors and avoid getting sucked into another unnecessary war in the Middle East. The escalatory spiral we are now in with Iran risks such an imprudent and costly conflict. The United States should instead find ways to extricate itself from dangerous entanglements in the Middle East in order to focus on priorities more directly connected to national security and prosperity.”
