A group of Pokémon Go players in Shreveport, Louisiana, is using the game to support local charities. According to Miles Jay Oliver writing for USA Today, players encountered several homeless people while playing and decided to form “Pokémon for Progress” to start a donation drive for the local shelter.
According to one volunteer, the game is great way to bring the community together, and players plan to continue volunteering to help different charities each month.
More than just a leisure activity, Pokémon Go and other interactive technology have real transformative power to help communities easily connect and solve problems at the local level.
Rather than isolating people, technology enables individuals to pursue shared goals—whether that is catching Pokémon or helping the homeless.
